Some Stress is Good
You do need to feel stress. It’s essential for the “fight or flight response.” If you’re in danger or there’s a threat heading your way, your body needs stress hormones to kick you into a fast response to that danger. If you’re walking down the road and a dog runs at you, you need to be ready to respond.
Excessive Stress Doesn’t Just Go Away
When you’re stressed and do nothing to change it, it doesn’t just go away on its own. Stress can build up and trigger anxiety attacks, insomnia, muscle tension, headaches, and other troubling ailments.
The best thing to do is talk to a doctor about stress management and therapeutic measures. You may need to try different approaches to find the right treatment plan, but you can’t ignore excessive stress and hope it disappears. It’s won’t.
Stress Affects Everyone Differently
Some people seem able to shrug off stress, but others may find it increases fast. Learning some of your triggers is important. Do you become more tense and anxious on days where you’ve only had a few hours of sleep? Does stress hit hardest when you’ve been ignoring a healthier diet?
Once you know what triggers the greatest amounts of stress, you can learn to manage it through exercise, mediation, positive self-talk, or time off. It is crucial to pair stress management with exercise and a healthy diet.
Too Much Stress Triggers Inflammation
While some stress is good, too much can trigger an inflammatory response in your body. High levels of unmanaged stress increase the risk of diabetes, heart disease, and high blood pressure. It would help you to learn different ways to reduce stress.
Are you experiencing too much stress as a family caregiver? You’re not alone. An AARP study of unpaid caregivers found that 36 percent felt high levels of emotional stress, and 17 percent felt physical stress.
Of those people, family members who felt they had no choice but to provide care were most likely to report feeling high stress levels. Those with a strong support team still felt stress, but it wasn’t as intense.
